Morning Buzzz! – Why, Where, and Who.

coffee  What’s the Buzzz about the Morning Buzzz?

The Morning Buzzz! is an opportunity for Member Business owners to get to know each other and to talk with the staff of the College Area Business District in a casual setting once a month. Of course everyone loves a free cup of coffee (yes, we’re buying), but there’s a more important reason to join us. Relationships!

Every business owner knows that one of the keys to success is developing good relationships. We all know that people are more inclined to spend their money at a business when there is a direct relationship between the them and the business owner. Relationships also foster referrals.

One of the goals of Morning Buzzz! is to help create new relationships between Member Business owners. Referrals, cross-promotions, and mutual success are only possible when business owners develop relationships with other business owners within their community. Morning Buzzz! is a perfect opportunity to take some time out of your busy day to sit, sip on coffee, and and get to know other business owners.

We also want to develop a relationship with you! Our Executive Director, Jim and Assistant Director, Merek, can offer Member Business owners many different opportunities and resources. The more we can get to know you and your business, the more we can help with your success.

Morning Buzz! is held on the third Thursday of every month at a different local coffee house within the College Area Business District. Our next Morning Buzzz! will be held this Thursday, April 16 from 8:00am – 9:30am at Daily Grinds Cafe located at 6695 El Cajon Boulevard.

You are invited and the coffee is on us. We hope to see you there!

College Area Business District Board of Directors Elections

The College Area Business District has completed the nominations phase of this year’s elections process with 9 seats to be filled this year. Those who have accepted their nominations are:

  • Incumbent, Tony Konja, Keg & Bottle
  • Incumbent, Lynn Owens, Owens Chiropractic
  • Incumbent, Jenny Piro, Fit with Jenny
  • Incumbent, Madir Cuddy, abcAcupuncture
  • Andrew Kootman, Order Up!
  • Bob Moosbrugger, SDSU Athletics
  •  Christian Cardona, Hair Social
  • Amir Rezai, I.Q. Graphics
  • Alex Mickle, Property Owner

Ballots will be made sent all business owners and property owners eligible to vote. We will also have an on line version of the ballot, however, each business owner or property owner can only vote once.

Voting will be open through 5:00pm on Monday, April 13, 2015. Any ballots received after that time will not be counted.  The ballots will be counted and preliminary results made public on Monday, April 13, 2015 and ratified during the Board of Directors Meeting on Wednesday, April 15, 2015.

Ribbon Cuttings are Coming Soon!

We want to celebrate the businesses in the College Area! We are going to do this by bringing Ribbon Cutting ceremonies to our District. Ribbon Cuttings are events at local businesses where a type of ceremony takes place and a ribbon is cut in honor of the celebration.

You may be wondering, “Who gets a Ribbon Cutting?” Ribbon Cutting ceremonies will take place for new businesses openings, business anniversaries, renovations, or any big landmark that you think is Ribbon Cutting material.

In order to make these ceremonies happen, we need YOUR help. We need our business owners to stay in touch with us and let us know when anniversaries are occurring, new businesses are opening, etc. If you want a Ribbon Cutting or know someone that does, please contact us by phone (619)582-1093 or by email at .

We will provide the ribbon and the scissors, you provide us with the news and the ceremony! We will help spread the news and do what we can to get people to the event. Afterwards, the College Area Business District staff will post a picture of your business at the Ribbon Cutting on Social Media to help market your business. These Ribbon Cuttings will come at no cost because they will be a benefit to being a member of our District.

Cater a Board Meeting Lunch or Host a Mixer

The College Area Business District loves to show off their great businesses so we are asking if your restaurant would like to cater one of our Monthly Board Meetings or if your business would like to host one of our Quarterly Member Mixers.

Both of these opportunities are a great way to introduce your restaurant or business to others to help create a buzz about your products and services.

Winter Business Mixer Voting Ballot & Ticket Information

2014 Annual Awards Mixer 
You are invited to come party with us for the 2014 Best of College Area Annual Awards Mixer. 
Every year the College Area Business District recognizes and awards businesses who have made a difference in the district over the past year. Voting for the College Area Best New Restaurant, Best New Business, andBusiness of the Year is in process now. If you are a business or property owner and would like to vote, the ballot can be found here. Please keep in mind that only votes with you name or business name will be counted. We only allow one ballot per property owner and/or business owner.


The “Best of College Area” Awards will be presented at the College Area Business District’s Annual Award Mixer at Social Life Pizza (6011 El Cajon Boulevard) on Wednesday, January 28th, 2015 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm.

As always, there is a suggested $10 donation per person which can be paid in advance on-line (Credit Card or Paypal) or at the door (Cash, Check, or Credit Card). Your $10 donation gets you in with food, drinks, networking and more!

Winter Business Mixer

Our Marketing Committee is getting ready for the Annual Awards Mixer to be held later this month at Social Life Pizza.
The College Area Business District holds an annual awards mixer during which we recognize many of the district’s “Bests”. This year awards will be given for the Best Storefront Improvement, Best New Business, Best New Restaurant, Best Redevelopment, and Business of the Year. One Board Member will also be recognized for their outstanding efforts within the district during the past year.
Any business member or property owner member of the College Area Business District will be able to vote for their favorites to acknowledge those who have done well to improve the business district or make a significant impact throughout 2014.

Another Successful BOO! Parade

This year’s BOO! Parade included 70 entries including marching bands, celebrities, community groups and schools participating to make the BOO! Parade the best EVER!  Thank you to all  who participated in the parade and hope you had FUN! The word on the street is that you made the BOO! Parade very exciting and entertaining for all who watched!
We especially want to thank the sponsors of the event whose support made the BOO! Parade possible. Thank you for your generosity and community support!
This event was truly a community effort with over 200 volunteers gathering together to help with the event. To all who gave up their Saturday for us, we are very grateful. We hope you had fun and we hope to see you again next year!
 A very special THANK YOU needs to go out to all who came to watch the parade. We hope you enjoyed the show and we promise, next year will be another special year to help you celebrate the Halloween spirit with San Diego’s only Halloween Parade!

New Farmer’s Market in the College Area!

The San Diego County Farm Bureau is opening the new College Avenue Farmers Market in the heart of the College Area of San Diego.

The Market is hosted by the College Avenue Baptist Church, and will offer fresh certified locally grown produce, hand-crafted arts & crafts and prepared foods for you to enjoy on site or to take home and enjoy with your family.

The College Avenue Farmers Market opened on Wednesday, October 29th at 2pm in the east parking lot located at 62nd and El Cajon Boulevard. It will operate – rain or shine – every Wednesday from 2-6 pm in the Winter and 3-7 pm in the Summer. WIC and EBT accepted!

Stop and Shop the Market THIS WEDNESDAY and every Wednesday to see all that the College Avenue Farmers’ Market has to offer!
